Dat dieren dromen is pas in 2020 voor het eerst in de wetenschappelijke literatuur beschreven. Dat is opmerkelijk, want je kunt vrij eenvoudig vaststellen dat dieren dromen: veel (huis)dieren vertonen immers de kenmerkende oogbewegingen van een REM-slaap. Octopussen verschieten tijdens een droom van kleur. In dit boek beschrijft wetenschapsfilosoof David Penã-Guzmán het recente onderzoek. Hij staat ook stil bij de filosofische consequenties ervan. Waarschijnlijk dromen veel dieren om dezelfde redenen als wij: in een droom verwerken we informatie tot een coherent wereldbeeld. Daarmee bewijst het dromen dat dieren geen simpele input-outputmachines zijn. Ze hebben een actief nachtbewustzijn, waarin verlangens, angsten en morele gevoelens werkzaam zijn. David M. Peña-Guzmán is universitair hoofddocent Geesteswetenschappen en Liberal Arts aan de San Francisco State University. Hij beweegt zich op het raakvlak van critical animal studies en wetenschapsfilosofie. Hij is co-auteur van Chimpanzee Rights: The Philosophers’ Brief en host van de Overthink podcast.
