Op 10 april 1743 zag Marie Catherine Josephe, gravin van Merode en prinses van Rubempré en Everberg, het levenslicht in het Zwartzusterklooster in Leuven. Ze kwam ter wereld als een van de rijkste adellijke dames van de Oostenrijks-Habsburgse Nederlanden. Een liefdesbaby geboren uit het schandaalhuwelijk van de prins van Rubempré met zijn linnenmeid … Freeke De Meyer portretteert haar als een zelfstandige ‘femme d’action’. Ze beheerde jarenlang een gigantisch patrimonium, onderhandelde voordelige huwelijken, regelde prestigieuze carrières en hield in talloze schriftjes nauwgezet de boekhouding bij. Ze mengde zich tijdens de Brabantse Revolutie in de politieke debatten, maar toen ze achteraf zag dat dit alleen maar chaos en onzekerheid bracht, verhuisden de grote politieke idealen al snel naar de achtergrond. Levend op de grens van het Ancien Régime stierf ze voor duidelijk werd dat de tijden definitief veranderd waren. Freeke De Meyer, historica, dook in de bijzonder rijke familiearchieven van Merode-Westerlo. Ze haalt deze bevlogen vrouw op een schitterende manier uit de vergetelheid.
