Nicolaas Matsier (gereformeerd opgevoed, vanaf zijn 15de ongelovig) werd op latere leeftijd nieuwsgierig. Hoe leest die Bijbel eigenlijk, als je niet gelooft, of niet meer gelooft, maar dat gigantische boek toch eens een keer onbevangen tot je wilt nemen als de grote literatuur die de Bijbel nu eenmaal is? Matsier wijdde twee boeken aan het Oude en het Nieuwe Testament die eerder verschenen bij Uitgeverij De Bezige Bij. Op initiatief van Uitgeverij THOTH voegde hij ze samen onder de titel Mooi boek die bijbel! De tekst werd aangepast en geactualiseerd en bovendien voorzien van 100 afbeeldingen afkomstig uit het Rijksmuseum. Met dit boek bewijst Nicolaas Matsier dat het mogelijk is de bijbel met groot plezier te lezen.'Matsier leest dat boek met de nauwgezette blik van de ongelovige, lichtvoetig en ernstig tegelijk, ook als het om zaken gaat die iedereen denkt te weten.'
