De oorspronkelijke Amerikaanse uitgave uit 2008 was direct een onverwachte bestseller. Niet alleen was het een handzaam boekje met een bescheiden prijsje, het kreeg bovendien vrij lovende recensies in veel Amerikaanse kranten. Het boekje kwam al gauw (eveneens in 2008) bij De Bezige Bij in Nederlandse vertaling uit, welke nu door Lemniscaat heruitgegeven is. Enerzijds is het een luchtige inleiding in de filosofie: het behandelt enkele belangrijke thema's binnen de metafysica, logica, epistemologie, ethiek, godsdienstfilosofie en taalfilosofie, en bespreekt ook stromingen zoals het existentialisme. De auteurs introduceren de thema's waarna ze die illustreren met grappen. Die zijn erg geslaagd, en bovendien erg goed vertaald (en het vertalen van humor is een hele kunst). Ofschoon het een aardig boekje is voor tussendoor, is filosofische diepgang ver te zoeken en als eerste kennismaking met de filosofie weinig geschikt. Het zal ook scholieren aanspreken, echter vanwege de vaak seksistische aard van de grappen, is het boek pas geschikt vanaf de middelbare schoolleeftijd.
