‘Ik heb geen literaire interesse, maar bestá uit literatuur, ik ben niets anders en kan niets anders zijn,’ schreef Franz Kafka aan zijn verloofde Felice Bauer. Kafka geldt als een van de belangrijkste schrijvers van de twintigste eeuw, met wereldberoemde werken als Het proces en Het slot. Schrijven was zijn bestaan, dat voor hem meer betekende dan een voltooid werk. In Kafka laat Safranski zien wat schrijven voor een leven kan betekenen, hoe alles eraan ondergeschikt kan worden gemaakt, welke uitdagingen en momenten van geluk eruit voortvloeien en welke inzichten zich openen op deze existentiële grens. Maar ook hoe vertwijfeld hij kon zijn, zo schreef hij in zijn testament dat al zijn werk vernietigd moest worden. Safranski vertelt op de hem kenmerkende wijze over de geluksmomenten die Kafka ervaart aan zijn bureau en over momenten waarop de wereld hem volkomen vreemd lijkt
