De inwoners van Manhattan staren in het prille ochtendlicht van een zomerdag in 1974 vol ongeloof naar de Twin Towers, waar de onverschrokken koorddanser Philippe Petit rent, danst en springt tussen de torens, honderdtien verdiepingen boven de grond. Hij pleegt daarmee de artistieke misdaad van de eeuw, niet-wetend dat decennia later de torens doelwit zouden zijn van de aanslag van de eeuw.
