Al jaren is het werken op de afdeling Spoedeisende Hulp (SEH) van een ziekenhuis favoriet bij jonge artsen. Ondanks de toenemende aandacht voor het specialisme spoedeisende geneeskunde was er tot op heden nog maar weinig praktische informatie beschikbaar voor de specifieke Nederlandse situatie. Vele professionals hebben daarom de handen ineengeslagen om dit zakboek te schrijven voor hun collega's op de SEH. Zakboek spoedeisende geneeskunde start met de eerste beoordeling en opvang van een acute patiënt (primary assessment), waarbij de diverse op de ABCDE-methodiek gebaseerde algoritmen voor de opvang van instabiele patiënten (volwassenen en kinderen) worden uitgewerkt. Vervolgens beschrijft het de aanpak en eerste behandeling (secondary assessment) van een breed scala aan klachten en symptomen. Specifieke, ernstige of vaak voorkomende ziektebeelden op de SEH staan in een apart hoofdstuk beschreven. De relevante vaardigheden van een arts op de SEH komen eveneens aan bod. Ten slotte zijn er korte aanvullende hoofdstukken die ingaan op laboratoriumuitslagen, triage, rampengeneeskunde en wet- en regelgeving.
