Het Latijnse epos Punica (Carthaagse Geschiedenis) van dichter en politicus Silius Italicus (eerste eeuw n.Chr.) is het langste gedicht uit de Romeinse lite ratuur. Het is ten onrechte relatief onbekend. Piet Schrijvers vertaalde een substantiële bloemlezing. Het verhaal van de Tweede Punische Oorlog (218-202 v.Chr.) bevat iconische scènes als de val van Saguntum, Hannibal die met olifanten over de Alpen trekt, de vernietigende Slag bij Cannae, Hannibal voor de Poorten van Rome en de trouwe loosheid van Carthago als politieke mythe. De oor log geldt als een van de bekendste en beroemdste uit de menselijke geschiedenis en diende (en dient) tot op de dag van vandaag als leerschool en vergelij kingsmateriaal voor militaire theorie en praktijk. Silius Italicus’ werk is een bron van verrijkende en verreikende gedachten over actuele zaken als imperialisme en geopolitiek, propaganda en desin formatie, oorlog en ethiek, oorlog en godsdienst en de rol van vrouwen in de oorlog.
