Interesse in ongelijkheid is niet nieuw. Dit boek gaat over de wijze waarop ongelijkheid in de 19de en de 20ste eeuw is onderzocht en welke bevindingen dat opleverde. Het volgt meer dan dertig historici en auteurs die sinds het einde van de 19de eeuw het thema bestudeerden met aandacht voor inkomen, koopkracht, bezit, consumptie, onderwijs, voeding, gezondheid, levensverwachting, lichaamslengte en de human development index. Welk beeld van het verleden construeerden ze, op welke wijze en waarom? Geschiedenis van de ongelijkheid start in Engeland om geleidelijk de wereld te omvatten. Een historische kijk op ongelijkheid draagt wellicht niet rechtstreeks bij tot de oplossing van het probleem, maar leidt zonder twijfel tot meer inzicht in huidige en komende ongelijkheid tussen en binnen landen.

Peter Scholliers (1953, Ukkel) is professor aan de Vrije Universiteit Brussel, waar hij les geeft over en onderzoek doet naar de geschiedenis van arm en rijk sinds twee eeuwen. In 1986 won hij de driejaarlijkse Sociaal-economische prijs C. Huysmans.
