Tim Birkhead geeft Francis Willughby, de eerste ornitholoog en een echte gentleman-geleerde, in ‘De fantastische meneer Willughby’ de erkenning die hij verdient. In de 17de eeuw werd de basis gelegd voor de moderne wetenschap: alleen door middel van observatie en experiment kon er écht nieuwe wijsheid opgedaan worden. Zo was Francis Willughby naarstig op zoek naar kennis over de natuur, en reisde hij met John Ray, zijn acht jaar oudere vriend en docent aan de universiteit van Cambridge, dwars door Europa (waaronder Nederland). Het was opwindend, veeleisend en uitputtend werk, waarbij hun belangstelling vooral uitging naar vogels. Het resultaat van hun inspanningen, het in 1676 verschenen standaardwerk de ‘Ornithologiae’, kan beschouwd worden als het allereerste serieuze vogelboek. Helaas maakte Francis Willughby de verschijning van dit boek niet mee. Hij overleed al op jonge leeftijd en kreeg nooit de erkenning die hem toekwam. Birkhead, een beroemdheid onder de hedendaagse natuurschrijvers, blijkt de perfecte biograaf en brengt hier nu verandering in.
